| Replacing the Stock Case Jewel: |
 |
|
 |
You will need:
1. First you need to remove the stock green jewel. There are 3 popular methods for this:
- Freezer: This usually only works on older models. Put the case lid in the freezer overnight,
then hit the back with a hammer. If you're lucky, it will pop right off.
- Hair Dryer: If you want to keep the stock jewel, this is usually the best choice. Aim a hair dryer on high
at the BACK of the jewel for 10 full minutes. Then use a couple small screwdrivers or a knife to pry the jewel off
carefully while the sticky stuff is still gooey.
- Drill: One of my favorites, if you don't plan on keeping the jewel. Skip right to the next step and drill the
hole out, going right through the old one.
2. Now you need to make a hole under the jewel. You can either use a dremel to carve through, or it's much faster
to get a 2 1/2" holesaw like the one below.

3. When you are done hacking it out, you should have an 1/8" lip around the edge. Depending on your jewel, you might
need to widen it just a bit to fit right. A rounded file or sandpaper work well for smoothing the edge out a bit.

4. Now put the replacement jewel (or cleared original) into the hole so it will stay. Some people use superglue, but
it tends to show through the jewel, and will cloud the jewel if not properly ventilated while drying. If you have a
jewel with black paint on it, DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE as it is a paint thinner and will make it look horrible. I recommend
using hot glue, as it holds well, does no permanent damage, and can be removed if you need to later.
5. Optional step: Depending on what you install for a jewel, you might want to put something underneath it. If the jewel is
clear and you can see the drives and ide, it looks better with a picture or pattern there. Anything will work, I've seen
colored paper, printed images, and holographic notebook covers that looked great. Use your imagination, make it fit the
scheme of your xbox.
Your replacement jewel should look like this now:
