Opening the Xbox360: Opening the Xbox360:

Complete teardown of the hard drive unit:

To open the hard drive unit, first remove the four screws with a T6 driver. One of the screws is under a sticker.

Pull the rounded end open a bit, then push the top cover towards the flat end. In the right image you can see the tabs that are holding that end together.

Pull the black tabs up and off, and make sure you don't lose the spring!

Remove the four screws shown with a T10 driver, then pull the metal shielding off.

Now you can slide the drive down a little bit, and carefully pull the connector out of the drive. If you lift the open end of the shielding you can now slide the drive out completely.

If you just wanted to swap your hard drive, then you're done. Put in the new drive and reassemble the case. If you want to take the drive case apart completely to paint it, keep going.

The bottom of the metal shielding is held to the plastic bottom with double-sided sticky tape. You can pry it off with a long screwdriver.

The top of the drive case is held onto the chrome side piece with four tabs. You need to carefully pry those tabs out to seperate the parts.

The last piece to be removed is the chrome HDD oval on the top of the drive case. It comes off easily, just pry it off carefully.
